Supply Chain Sustainability

We use our purchasing power to buy energy-efficient and sustainably sourced goods, ranging from building materials to paper and electronics, and encourage our suppliers to reduce their own impacts. Like most companies, a large percentage of our carbon footprint comes from our supply chain, and we partner with firms that operate responsibly to mitigate this impact. Our Supply Chain Sustainability Program embeds sustainability criteria in our ongoing procurement process, encourages continuous supplier improvement, and incentivizes environmental stewardship and action to reduce GHG emissions. We encourage our top suppliers to disclose their climate risks, environmental targets, greenhouse gas emissions, and emissions reduction activities through the CDP Supply Chain Questionnaire each year and actively look for opportunities to collaborate with our suppliers on shared environmental goals.

In 2020, 123 of our requested suppliers disclosed climate risks, GHG emissions, and other environmental data to us through the CDP’s Supply Chain Program, a 91% response rate. Performance on the CDP Climate Change Questionnaire, along with other sustainability criteria, is incorporated into each supplier’s annual management scorecard. Suppliers reported 69.58 metric tons in estimated annual CO2e savings, along with approximately $7.68 billion in annual monetary savings from emission reductions. In addition, 81% of suppliers in the program reporting having their own forward-looking climate targets, and 76% of suppliers are engaging their own suppliers on climate issues.
